Do The Next Thing
DTNT is short for Do The Next Thing. It is also a Detent, the catch in a mechanism that holds a part in place until you deliberately move it. We couldn’t decide which we liked better so we went with both.
The next thing isn’t always a new venture. Sometimes it’s the next step in one we’ve been on for years, or taking something that already works and improving or refining it. Sometimes it’s a clean start on something unrelated. The most important thing is to know when to take that next step or do that next thing.
That’s the detent part. Before you can move on from something you have to stop and hold it steady: finish it, get it genuinely working, make it stable enough that it isn’t relying on you standing over it. The discipline is in not releasing something that doesn’t feel done. The difficulty is knowing the difference between perfect and finished. Only one of those will ever see the light of day.
